How to get to Uplistsikhe from your base
How to get to Uplistsikhe depends on where you start: travel through Gori or Kvakhvreli on your own, drive from Tbilisi, or join an organised outing. Treat the final approach to the cave town as a separate part of the journey. Arriving in Gori is useful, but it still leaves the onward connection and your return to arrange.
Choose your overnight base before building a transport plan. Staying in Gori lets you combine the monument with the town; staying in Tbilisi works with a full day out. Keep the return journey visible in your plans rather than choosing only an outward departure. A connection that looks convenient in the morning may leave an awkward gap after your visit.

Train and marshrutka via Gori or Kvakhvreli
The heritage agency's undated directions describe travel from Tbilisi to Gori, then a bus or minibus to Kvakhvreli and a 2 km walk. They also describe a Borjomi train to Kvakhvreli followed by the same walking distance. Use this as an outline of the route, then obtain the departures and stopping pattern for your chosen travel date. A route description alone is not enough to time a connection.
With a marshrutka, settle the destination and onward stop before setting off. Decide whether you want to walk from Kvakhvreli or organise a taxi from Gori, particularly when carrying luggage. Keep the walking leg separate from time inside the monument: reaching the entrance does not finish the day's walking. The cave town visit guide explains the rock surfaces and steps.

Travel to Uplistsikhe with a live guide, an air-conditioned vehicle and hotel pickup and drop-off; admission and lunch are extra.
A taxi from Gori and the return journey
For a taxi, agree on the destination, waiting arrangement and return point together. A September 2026 secondary Gori guide gives 30 to 40 GEL per car for a return ride with waiting. That is a planning reference rather than a regulated tariff or a quote for your journey. Specify whether you want the driver to wait throughout the visit or collect you at an agreed time.
Keep a little flexibility between leaving the monument and any onward journey from Gori. If you also want to see the fortress and old town, decide which comes first before agreeing the taxi arrangement. A separate town visit and cave town visit need their own time; do not count waiting in Gori as part of a ride to Uplistsikhe.
Taxi and transfer from Tbilisi International Airport (TBS)
Use Gori as the destination for an airport transfer that ends in town, then arrange the additional journey to Uplistsikhe. Give the driver the actual arrival address rather than simply the name of the region. An airport arrival also needs a decision about luggage and where you will spend the night, especially if the cave town is your first sightseeing stop.
For a visit on arrival day, establish the monument's opening arrangements before committing to the journey. Allow for the flight arrival and the handover to ground transport instead of treating a driving estimate as the whole trip. The admission and opening page separates entry planning from transport costs.
Car rental and parking
A rental car collected at Tbilisi International Airport (TBS) suits an independent itinerary that continues through Gori. Compare the collection and return arrangements against your flight and overnight stops. Choose the car journey if you want to organise the sequence yourself; choose a guided outing if you want the vehicle and sightseeing stops arranged together.
Ask about parking arrangements at the monument when planning the drive, including where to leave the car and any charge on the day. Budget parking separately from admission and rental. Keep enough room in your itinerary to leave the vehicle, reach the visitor area and prepare for walking before beginning the visit.
Find a rental car at Tbilisi on Economybookings.
When an organised day trip is simpler
The hotel-pickup outing on this page runs for 10 hours and includes a live guide, an air-conditioned vehicle, bottled water and hotel drop-off. Its route also visits Jvari Monastery and Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, with an optional Stalin Museum visit and a lunch stop. Uplistsikhe admission, the optional museum admission and the meal cost extra. This is a sightseeing day with hotel transport; arrange your airport journey separately.
